Program

While commissioning of many building systems has been around for years, Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx) is relatively new to the design and construction industries. This presentation will provide a primer on the practice of BECx and its benefits with real-world case studies.

In today’s world of faster and more complex construction, the need for durable, long-lasting, high-performance buildings has never been greater.  Increasing environmental concerns and growing regulation in both new construction and existing structures require high-performance building enclosure design. Our Building Enclosure Group provides focused and specialized, multidisciplinary services to architects, building owners, developers, contractors, and product manufacturers. A building enclosure consultant contributes specialized engineering knowledge for the effective integration and continuity of air, water, and thermal barriers for below and above-grade structures, including exterior cladding systems, fenestration, and roofing systems.

Greg is a licensed architect with over 30 years of experience, who specializes in building enclosure commissioning, consulting, investigations, and testing. With extensive experience in building enclosure detailing and building science, specifications, and construction, Greg understands how to detail complex building enclosures and constructability.  His project work includes a wide array of new construction and renovation projects including healthcare, educational, institutional, commercial, office, mixed-use, and housing projects.  Greg has also successfully administered multiple LEED-certified projects and assisted in numerous other sustainable projects.

As Director of ZS Architectural Engineering’s Building Enclosure Group, he oversees building enclosure commissioning, consulting, investigations, and testing services.

Because ZS understands building performance issues and how enclosures can fail from our extensive testing and investigation experience, we know how to design and construct building enclosures that are higher performing and sustainable.  Building owners, contractors, and architects turn to ZS when they need a firm that fully understands the aesthetic and functional performance requirements for their building enclosure systems.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the general functional performance requirements of the building enclosure.
  • Describe the BECx process and the value the process may bring to a project.
  • Describe the various phases of BECx and the deliverables typically produced.
  • Review building enclosure functional performance testing processes and methods.
